The Charge of Room 1016
by Ted D.

Ten top tweens marched into camp
with fears of grammar and writer’s cramp.

Yet each charged with grace to ten-sixteen;
well, as much grace as Nature gives to a tween.

There’s Kylie who’s smiley – shoots darts when he’s mad;
Brandon eats skinny pancakes – they call him “The Bad.”

It’s no miracle Melissa’s the construction site queen;
Calvin Alvin’s brother tried to kill him; tell me, why so mean?

Diego Lego builds imaginary creatures,
while Ravyn has risen from the blood of teachers.

Keep her laughing, it’s why we like Luz;
Brittany was absent, perhaps a slow cruise?

Her games with stuffed animals makes her Tehya the Playa,
Shannon eats stinky fruit; that’s why she won’t sha-ya.

It’s Ted the Tyrant’s job to lead all of yous
writing poems and memoirs and some sort of blues.

And when he’s away eating duck in Beijing
treat my friend, Justin, as if he is king.

And if all goes well, for three weeks we’ll be writing
things to make sense out of life, make life more delighting.

For writing is thinking and noticing too;
so work hard, play fair, find the joy inside you.
